第二類條件句

The Second Conditional

第二類條件句用於敘述一個對現況的假設，以及這個假設可能帶來的結果，所描述的假設是與當下情況相反或不符的，if 開頭的子句為假設，以過去簡單式敘述，而主要子句是可能的結果，以「would/could + 原形動詞」敘述。 如課程提到 If you survived, and everything on Earth seemed to carry on about the same but just with half gravity, there would likely be health consequences. （如果你存活下來，地球上的一切萬物似乎都會保持不變，只是重力減半，可能對身體狀況造成影響。 ）句中的假設情況有違現在事實，所以動詞為過去簡單式 survived 和 seemed to。 另外一句 What would happen if the gravity here on Earth was suddenly cut in half?（如果地球上的重力突然減半，會發生什麼事？）句中的假設情況 if the gravity here on Earth was suddenly cut in half 一樣與現實不符，所以用過去簡單式敘述。這裡同學可以注意，以正式用法來說，be 動詞在假設語氣中一律為 were，也就是說不管主詞的人稱或是單複數，對應的 be 動詞都應該要用 were，如例句一 if I were you 而非 if I was you。
