分詞構句
Participle Clauses
今天要來和大家介紹的是分詞構句。所謂分詞，共分為現在分詞（Ving）與過去分詞（Vpp）。分詞構句的使用時機是，當重複的主詞省略，並在動詞做出變化。 例如，The father has his own flotation issues to deal with, but he keeps up with them, watching for anything suspicious in the water.（水稚爸爸有自己的漂浮問題要擔心，但牠也隨時注意孩子們的安危，注意水裡是否有可疑的東西。） 該句原句應為：The father has his own flotation issues to deal with, but he keeps up with them, and he watches for anything suspicious in the water. 由於不想讓 he 再重複一次，所以使用分詞構句的文法。將主詞 he 去掉，並把watches這個動詞改成「現在分詞」watching，形成「分詞構句」。 關於動詞在變化時，該改成「現在分詞」或「過去分詞」，取決於主詞是「主動執行」該動作，還是「被動接受」該動作。詳見以下例句：

- Seeing the police coming, the thief quickly ran away.(= The thief saw the police coming, and the thief quickly ran away.)
看到警察來了，小偷就快速地跑了。主詞 the thief 重複，故省略其中一個。當省略的是前半句的主詞時，saw 要改成分詞。「看到」是小偷做出的動作，所以改成現在分詞 seeing。
- The thief is running on the street, chased by policemen. (= The thief is running on the street, and the thief was chased by policemen.)
小偷在街上跑，被警察追著。主詞 the thief 重複，故省略其中一個。當省略的是後半句的主詞時，was chased 把動詞 was 省略，留下分詞。小偷是「被追」，所以留下過去分詞 chased。
- Hearing her fans shouting out her name, the actress rolled down the car window to say hi. (= The actress heard her fans shouting out her name, so she rolled down the car window to say hi.)
演員聽到粉絲呼喊她的名字，搖下車窗打招呼。主詞 the actress 重複，故省略其中一個。當省略的是前半句的主詞時，heard 要改成分詞。「聽到」是演員做出的動作，所以改成現在分詞 hearing。
